Hope. Everybody needs it but it is intangible and often empirically illogical. I want to explore the human relationship with hope and despair. These are fundamental and powerful emotions in human minds but hard to define precisely in words. Even whether hope is good or bad is open to question by some. ‘Hope is like art, it gives us illusions that allow us to go on living’ On one hand hope implies resolution to the unknowable, acceptance in the face of turmoil, it is not a virtue of mastery but of humility. On the other hope can become escapism, can tip into treacherous delusion. What does this suggest about the lotto which sells a morsel of unrealistic hope at a competitive fee?
