Figurative Distortion is the theme I chose to convey through this piece.
In the modern-day media, many publishers portray the human figure in an unrealistic light, manipulating the model’s true image. To respond to this idea, I painted two A2 portraits of my younger brother in different positions and proceeded to cut them into strips. I then interlaced each strand of the paintings together to construct the overall woven outcome. My work heavily focuses on the process of construction-deconstruction-reconstruction. The aim of this is to communicate the theme of distortion and mimic the media’s attitude towards portraiture.
The overall message is subjective to the viewer, but heavily influenced by the judgmental society we find ourselves in and to think before assuming anything about a stranger.
