Project Name

Culture Clash - Surrealism and the Unconscious Mind

Materials used:

The mediums I used was white organza For the sleeves. I then hand stitched cloud using grey and blue embroidery Wool. For the jacket I used white crushed velvet.

For my culture clash I have investigated the surrealist movement and influences of Sigmund Freud’s theories of the subconscious mind.

The idea of the dreams being manifested through the unconscious intrigued me leading me to combine principals of Freudian concepts and the aesthetics of surrealist artists and fashion designers such as Salvador Dali, Vitoria and Rolf, Agatha Ruiz de la Pravda and Elsa Schiaparelli who I used for inspiration for my garment.

It was my intention to design a jacket influenced by Schiaparelli using her infamous Velvet fabric. I have developed the pattern to incorporate a panelling technique, often used in corsetry. I wanted the final aesthetic to appear androgynous to promote equality and diversity, similarly to that of the surrealists.

It was imperative for me to promote my concept and surrealists aesthethetics, which can be seen in the large puffy shape of the sleeve, the hand embroidery of clouds and the cloud patch.
